The Vision
When I sat down to produce "MORTAL," I didn't want to make just another generic trap beat. The goal was to capture that quintessential "dark trap" energy something that feels heavy, atmospheric, and professional enough to hold its own next to industry-leading placements. We are talking about high-impact sound design that demands attention. This track was designed to be a rap beat that provides a canvas for artists looking for gritty, authentic, and modern production.
FL Studio Workflow
I rely on FL Studio as my primary DAW because of its unparalleled flexibility in sequencing and its robust routing capabilities. For "MORTAL," the session was set to 144 BPM in the key of Eb Minor a classic choice for trap music that allows for deep, resonant 808s that don't sound too muddy, yet maintain that dark, ominous character.
Sound Selection & Arrangement
Engineering the Low-End
One of the most common mistakes in amateur production is failing to manage the 808s properly. In "MORTAL," the 808 is the heartbeat of the track. To get that clean, distorted, yet controlled sub-bass, I use a combination of saturation and EQ. I focus on creating a side-chain relationship between the kick drum and the 808 so that they never compete for the same space in the frequency spectrum.
Mixing for Professional Clarity
Mixing is the difference between a demo and a radio-ready record. In this project, I performed extensive EQing using the Fruity Parametric EQ 2 on almost every channel. I subtractively EQ'd to remove unwanted mud from the midrange and pushed the high-end for air and clarity.
Using my RODE NTH 100 flat-signature headphones, I was able to make surgical decisions about the placement of each element in the stereo field. A wide stereo image is vital for modern trap music; it gives the track depth, making it feel like it surrounds the listener. By using creative panning and subtle delay effects, I ensured that "MORTAL" has a massive, immersive feel.
